The Saltlist

Satire in the Age of Letters and Technology- more than just a pinch of it.

What we’re all about

With journalism today acquiring more than a tinge of yellow and mighty pen wielding journalists dancing to the tunes of the Radias, we present to you an online magazine, a media for change property -The Saltlist.

Who are ‘we’ ?

‘We’ are a bunch of budding journalists who began work on this idea conceptualized by our mentor, founder and editor-in-chief, Subi Chaturvedi, in a classroom on the 1st of April 2011 and came out with the first issue on 4th April after three days of burning the midnight oil (but never the motivational fuel). We are students. You know its dedication when students meet deadlines for non – coursework related things.

‘Hello world….we are here to change you’. We are the ‘we’ here. Yes, idealistic, but hell, reality was someone’s idea. ‘We’ want to be that someone.

Why The Saltlist ?

Why not? And if not us, then who? Why wait for that ‘who’ when ‘we’ can take the reins in our hands? There is way too much happening in the world for us to keep quiet. There is way too much happeniing in OUR world for us to keep quiet. Right from opinion pieces on patriachy and despotic rulers to soulful poetry to fashion tips to grassroot ethical news reporting to random rants, The Saltlist is a multipurpose blog catering to a wide array of interests we would like to speacialize in as future journalists. We also have our very own Salt TV!

Not convinced? Let our founder, mentor and editor-in-chief Subi Chaturvedi expand on The Saltlist-

Reading Gandhi. Everyday object. Locating a site of protest. No rest. Go pansy. There’s a load on your chest. Can’t do with out it. It was free & then they taxed it. Speech was free. Now you pay for it. On the Wall street. On the highway. Information costs big bucks. Wit & humour. Some Sour. Some Dour. Some Images. Some Verse. Some more text. Some rain. Some thirst. Political. Local. National. Regional. Across the Divide. On the other Side. Fence Sitters. Bull shitters. Plain Bitters. Pockets full of Roses. Pennies & Lemons. All too many. The school girls. All grown up. Dump the Nanny. Fanny went to town. A Certain Ms.Nadia went around. Butt naturally. Truant gatekeeprs. Weepers Jeepers. SATIRE. Zeepers. Bloopers. Stoopers. Poopers. Poop kids too. With upset tummies. Mother. Mary went missing. SALT got LISTED. The Lambs grew up. AGEless.Timeless. Fearless.Voices. Some notes. She wrote. Blank Verse. Scraps of paper. Crumpled. LETTERS.Comments. views. News. Colours. In all their hues. Swirls of Pink. Purple. Yellow. Blue. Green. Grass. Orange skies. Marmalade trees. Affairs. National. International. Mysteries. Cinema. We are a startup oozing confidence, so pull us back to ground with constructve criticism. Incase you think the online magazine is a cracker, do let us know. In short, we value your feedback a lot more than the big shot companies with dustbins full of ‘Letters to the Editor’.

We have tons of things in the pipeline, will let you know when they are set in stone. Happy reading!

This blog is not working, no designing, no attraction, no photography. Nothing. Why would anyone wants to visit this blog? What’s there in this blog that is not seen in others? I would rather go visit some celeb blog than waste my time reading this this. I know you people are new but still add some concept to it. Your promotional video is also sucky, more like a compilation of FB pics with captions. Meh. Reading your articles is like reading a summary of TOI/HT articles. You all are new and you all should try giving it a new facet. Ok for a noob attempt though.
    Ain’t hatin’, just sayin’.

    In reason,
    Shubhi

    Wokay. Random ranting.

    1. Rocket science much? Yes, they are from FB. Point being? How do you think we could have done it better?

    2. Every article is accompanied by a visual/s. We are adding a photography section in a bit. Infact, it was supposed to come out in this issue but we had to put it off for later. There is a difference btw a website and a blog. We have to work with templates. What design are you talking about?

    3. TSL is different from a celeb blog. Why should you be reading it? Ask the 5000 people who have read the blog in 10 days. If you prefer reading a celeb blog, go right ahead. We are not holding you back (not to mention we CAN’T :P).

    4. Be specific with your criticisms. Which articles are HT/TOI rip offs? None of them. Are you talking about the one on Hijab which TOI or HT won’t cover beyond the French ban? Or the bit on the lack of puclic transport in Gurgaon, which btw, stands out for its hilarity. Or the fashion piece on plus size women which Femina won’t bother with? Don’t be so cryptic, TSL is DYING to know what you are talking about. Really.

Else, put a tab on the trolling.

1.”I know you people are new but still add some concept to it. ”
    2.”Ain’t hatin’, just sayin’.”
3.”You all are new and you all should try giving it a new facet. Ok for a noob attempt though.”

For the last time let me clear you guys that my feedback was not against your blog, it was for your blog.Giving it a concept doesn’t mean that you need some web designer or something,it can be done through your articles and you could have done better job with templates.

Yes, your promotional video could have been better. You could have shot by yourself, no matter what kind of camera you use, at least there will be some originality than putting on pictures taken from FB.

Celeb blog does not only mean bollywood/hollywood celeb blogs, there are many writers, journalists, social workers and many more who are been categorize under celeb blogs. I visited your blog because there was a lot of hype created about TSL on FB and also received an invitation. There are many more ways through which publicity can be done,FB is not the only medium.

5000 people in 10 days is not a big deal especially when the promotion has been done through FB where you can find your collage mates, seniors, other friends,family..etc. and who said that you people are holding me back, maybe this is for the last time i am visiting your blog if it will be carried on like this.

summary of articles, what i meant was that you should not take very obvious topics that’s there in daily news papers. I suppose visuals are taken from internet,at least visuals of food and beverages, lifestyle and city should be of your own.

    Trolling? Lolwut.
Constructive criticism is constructive. Deal with it.

    Madam,

Deep apologies on behalf of The Saltlisters for calling you a troll, I’m sure a troll in the name of constructive criticism does not use words like ‘sucky’ like you did.

    I quote-
“Giving it a concept doesn’t mean that you need some web designer or something,it can be done through your articles and you could have done better job with templates.”

I’m sure a better template would add ‘concept ‘ to the blog , but we believe what matters most is the ‘content’ i.e the gift, not its packaging.

“Yes, your promotional video could have been better. You could have shot by yourself, no matter what kind of camera you use, at least there will be some originality than putting on pictures taken from FB.”

Well, that we take as constructive feedback. In the person who made the videos defence, I would just say that the first issue of the blog was assembled, packaged and put online in less than 72 hours. If one of us made the effort of putting their time and effort in making a promotional video (again a ‘sucky’ noob attempt by a person, who hasn’t ever held a video camera before, with fb pictures and captions, as you say),we, as well as many many others appreciate it. Without it, TSL would not have created so much hype and attracted you to us. As far as originality goes, sincerest apologies, our articles will show originality, the blog is about that, not the promo video.

Also ” I visited your blog because there was a lot of hype created about TSL on FB and also received an invitation. There are many more ways through which publicity can be done,FB is not the only medium. 5000 people in 10 days is not a big deal especially when the promotion has been done through FB where you can find your collage mates, seniors, other friends,family..etc. and who said that you people are holding me back, maybe this is for the last time i am visiting your blog if it will be carried on like this.”

Well, it seems to me that your ‘method’ of doing publicity would include hoardings, posters, street criers, pamphlets inside newspaper and word of mouth. There is no doubt that they will be HIGHLY effective. I doubt any of The Saltlisters know you, so an invite reached you through some random person on Facebook so you got to know about it. Again, your point? Since we believe in the power of social media, we used it to our advantage. If you think getting 5000 views is easy, honey it takes years, open your eyes.

Also, we don’t have a sign saying ‘rights of admission reserved’, we can’t control trolls from not reading/commenting. we can only be diplomatic in our replies and moderate comments.

“summary of articles, what i meant was that you should not take very obvious topics that’s there in daily news papers.”

Since you obviously don’t approve of social media as an appropriate publicity tool, you would not think of it as a marketing weapon either.
And hmmm… If you had read the articles like you claimed to, you would realise that there is daily news with an angle which is not covered in the newspapers. News is supposed to have an element of novelty, otherwise it becomes stale . Still unsatisfied? Our kashipur story is not one which has been covered in the papers since the past decade. Did you read that?

“I suppose visuals are taken from internet,at least visuals of food and beverages, lifestyle and city should be of your own.”

Visuals of food, beverage and the city WERE taken by the writers themselves. We captured the Anna Hazare campaign at Jantar Mantar – we own copyright of those pictures madam. Most of the other images have been taken from the internet and have been given due credit. Atleast cross check your facts before putting them online (btw we do that too).

Well, if you say you’re not trolling, you’re not making sense either, you are just wasting both of our ‘sucky’ time.

Atually Subhi just means that she wants to read something new, something original. So perhaps you can encourage writings of different styles, genres and about not-so-common stuff. The thing is, you need to make this into something that would force people to read what’s written here. Sometimes it helps to be more subjective rather than factual. And it’s not alwaysabout flashy pictures or videos. Otherwise great work done! I know how difficult it is to run a website. It’s awesome and i’m sure it’ll become better with the years. 😀

Interesting home page (until I came upon this chain of discussion here).
Is there some way I can contribute to the home page? Write-ups on books, humour, What ifs, Lists…?

Every thing is right about your blog. The content and everything. But the only problem is with the home page. Use ‘Read More’ after the first para of the post. Not everyone is going to scroll down to look for the pages.

I hope you guys got it. But the content is superb. Keep it up. 🙂

Great going. Never cease to believe that a small group of thoughtful individuals can change the world. Do look at a range of topics to explore – The Economist is doughty journalism which marries new technology to time honoured writing. All the very best.
